The Sea Bus Portable Touch Tank

After attending the National Marine Educators Conference held in Portland Maine in 2008, Touch Tanks for Kids became motivated to design and build a portable touch tank aquarium that could be used as a travel tank for various Marine science programs. We met with many teachers, formal and informal Marine educators, staff at the New England Aquarium, and the technicians at Marine Ecological Habitats. Through this process, we created The Portable Sea Bus Touch Tank Aquarium.

Construction

The Portable Sea Bus Touch Tank Aquarium is a 25-gallon specialty designed portable Touch Tank that is 2 feet by 2 feet by 36″ high with a 14″ tank. The top of the tank is manufactured out of .75” thick clear acrylic. With proper care, this material is very durable. The base is manufactured with .75” polypropylene. This material is categorized in the mechanical plastics family. It is durable, however not transparent like acrylic.

Transportation, Set-up & Maintenance:

Transporting and caring The Portable Sea Bus Touch Tank Aquarium requires attention and care. The tank must be moved delicately and must never be dropped. The base includes caster for easy movement a crossed a flat surface. The tank may be moved separate from the base or as a unit.

Operation

The water is circulated through a Blueline 30HD 850GPH 115v sealed motor housing water pump and directed through a filtration system that includes: a sand filter and a carbon canister that holds the carbon media bag and the carbon media in place that pulls organic molecules out of the water, yielding cleaner water, pelleted carbon is recommended.
